At Spanish Au Pair, we aim for our Au Pairs to enjoy everything about their stay in Galway. All families pay the highest pocket money available in Europe and are located within 20-30 minutes from English classes. This ensures our Au Pairs make the most of their leisure time in Galway, one of Europe’s youngest and most vibrant cities.

Galway’s hub is 18th-century Eyre Square, a popular meeting spot surrounded by shops and traditional pubs. Just a minute from Eyre Square is the picturesque Latin Quarter, where stone-clad cafés, boutiques and art galleries line the winding lanes. We’ve picked out some of our favourite things to do in Galway.

Galway City Museum

A winner of TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence for five years in a row and located beside the Spanish Arch, Galway City Museum is a must-see for anyone interested in the fascinating history of this beautiful city. The museum boasts impressive exhibitions over three floors, and features a great children’s area for the little ones too.

Enjoy the nightlife

As a city with one of Ireland’s youngest populations, Galway is famous for its nightlife, especially its pub scene. Many of the pubs have regular live traditional music sessions – when there, make sure to sample one of the local beers, such as Galway Hooker, a pale ale brewed in neighbouring town Oranmore.

Attend a festival

Keep an eye on the papers and local listings for the different festivals that happen throughout the year. The summer in particular is buzzing with festivals, kicking off in June with the Summer Street Festival and continuing with the Fringe Festival and Galway Arts Festival. These regular festivals attract hundreds of talented musicians and artists, all keen to make an impression on locals and tourists alike.

Have some laughs

If you’re not into traditional music, don’t worry, because plenty of venues offer other types of entertainment – most notably, comedy. Many of Ireland’s top comedians have started their careers in one of Galway’s many comedy venues – who knows, you may spot the next big talent. One notable venue is the Róisín Dubh, which has a regular comedy night on Tuesdays and other entertainment throughout the week. This is a popular spot so get there early!

Walk by the sea

Galway is located on Ireland’s Atlantic coast – and the city centre is just a couple of steps away from the seafront. If you really want to experience the Galway coast, however, visit the seaside suburb of Salthill, which features a 2km-long promenade for seaside strolls. When you’re finished your walk, grab some fish and chips, and sit on the beach to watch the sun go down. Simply heavenly. Don’t forget to join our Spanish Au Pair Whatsapp group for our Au Pairs Galway candidates, where ypou can get all sorts of advice on your placement and on your stay in Galway. Being an Au Pair in Galway is an experience you won’t forget.
